I've tested this on my late 2008 MBP 15-incher and it works perfectly. The latest version of gfxCardStatus is 2.4 on Mac Informer. Manually switch to Integrated Only or Discrete Only mode to force one GPU on or the other. The Dependencies list: open the gfxCardStatus menu when your discrete GPU is active to see what is turning it on. Automatically updates when the GPU switches, in real time. Growl or Notification Center notifications when the GPU changes. Features: Simple, clean 'i' and 'n' icons that signify Intel HD Graphics, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics, respectively.

Note that as of version 1.7 (now at 1.7.5) gfxCardStatus now includes full support for the 9400M/9600M GT dual-GPU enabled Macs without logging out. gfxCardStatus is a free menu bar application that keeps track of which graphics card your MacBook Pro is using at any given time. Some apps installed using the Mac package installer will prompt you for a password when you try to move it to the Trash. Only major third party software is Microsoft Office. I have no third party utility software, anti-virus, or anything like that. I reformatted the drive and reinstalled macOS Sierra, and it happened again. Most 3rd party apps can be smoothly uninstalled in that way, but you cannot delete built-in apps by doing this. I began having lots of kernel panics lately, with Sierra.
